Exploring positive outcomes of biodiversity and carbon in the context of forest ecosystem services

Speaker: Daniel Murdiyarso

Abstract
The emerging new scheme to mitigate climate change will be swinging towards the use of forest with broad agenda under the UNFCCC called REDD-plus.  The inclusion of forest conservation in particular will potentially impinge on provisions of other multilateral agreement, such as CBD. There are a number of potential conflicts as well as synergies to be explored. Nevertheless, not all UNFCCC parties are also CBD signatories at the same.

Payment for ecosystem services is likely offering a versatile option until stringent rules and modalities of any compliance system is in place.  Besides less the scheme does not follow any particular protocol it also helps local community to build their negotiating capacity.  Some examples and experiences are demonstrated to evaluate the possibility of enhancing positive outcomes for sustainability of forest and livelihoods of forest-dependent people.
Keywords: PES, REDD, incentives, conflicts and synergies, UNFCCC and CBD.
