Founded in 1666 as Académie Royale des Sciences, the Académie des sciences is now a part of the Institut de France (which comprises 5 autonomous branches, Académie Française, Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Académie des sciences, Académie des Beaux-Arts, Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques). The Académie des sciences has 248 full Members, 145 foreign associates and 113 corresponding members. The Académie is active in the national and international scientific community, and produces: recommendations and reports on science and technology, which help to define scientific and technical research policy; the Comptes Rendus, bilingual journals which publish brief and review articles; it also organizes public meetings and colloquia in cooperation with other French or foreign Academies; and awards prizes. The Académie monitors the quality of the teaching of the sciences and runs actions at the level of primary school ("La main à la pâte" or "Hands on") and junior high school up to university level. The Académie plays an active role in the development of international scientific relations.
