The Royal Society of New Zealand is an independent, statutory body responsible for fostering a culture supportive of science and technology. It consists of a national academy, and a membership of scientific and technological societies, regional societies, fellows and individuals. Established in 1867, the Royal Society has a long and proud history of representing scientists and fostering scientific endeavours in New Zealand.
The society seeks to contribute to New Zealand society by promoting public awareness, knowledge and understanding of science and technology (S&T); advancing S&T education;providing expert advice on important issues to the Government and the community. It also supports New Zealand's community by encouraging, promoting and recognizing excellence in S&T; providing support and a vehicle for the professional needs and development of scientists and technologists; establishing and administering a core of professional standards and ethics in S&T for all members .
