The Albanian Academy of Sciences, founded in 1972, is the most important scientific institution in the Republic of Albania, consisting of the country's most prominent scientists. The Academy is divided into two sections - humanities and science. It also houses the Centre of the Albania Encyclopedia, a project management group, a department of foreign relations and a library. The functions of the Academy are to: carry out studies and research in various fields of science; oversee the opening of new scientific fields; cooperate with other scientific institutions; support the participation of the scientific societies and foundations in scientific activities; organize science-related national and international activities.
