The Austrian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1847. It is both a learned society and one of the leading non-university research institutions of Austria. The learned society comprises two divisions: a mathematical and science division with 45 regular members, and a humanities and social sciences division (45 regular members). The functions of the Academy are: advising the government on matters related to scientific research; conducting basic research in 56 research institutions; granting scholarships and awarding prizes; and promoting international scientific cooperation.
