The Estonian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1938 as a body of scientists and learned societies. From 1946 to 1995, it also comprised various scientific establishments, including 19 research institutes, design and technological centres. According to the new Act on the Estonian Academy of Sciences, adopted in 1997, the primary mission of the Academy is to promote research in natural, technical and humanitarian sciences, and to assist in the social, cultural and economic development of Estonia. The Academy organizes and evaluates research work, publishes scientific and popular literature and promotes scientific cooperation at national and international levels. The Academy's current membership is 72.
