The National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Republic of Korea, was launched in 1954 to promote the development of sciences and facilitate the development of national culture. As a national institution representing the nation's scholars and scientists, the Academy offers advice and recommendations to the government on matters pertaining to science and educational programmes. As part of its mandate to promote the sciences, the Academy sponsors an annual international symposium and holds membership seminars. It also publishes academic publications.
