The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1808, is devoted to the entire field of learning. It comprises two divisions: science (110 regular members) and humanities and social sciences (90 regular members). The Academy advises the government on matters related to scientific research; judges the quality of scientific research (peer review); provides a forum for the scientific world; promotes international scientific cooperation and acts as an umbrella organization for institutes engaged in basic scientific research and disseminating scientific information.
