The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, founded in 1652, is the world's oldest academy involved in natural sciences and medicine. The Leopoldina draws its 1300 members from its home countries Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as another 30 countries. Since 2008 the Leopoldina is the first National Academy of Sciences in Germany. It advises the government, the parliament, and the public about socially relevant scientific issues and represents Germany in international academy boards. The Leopoldina organises a large number of national and international meetings and symposia and issues statements and recommendations. The Leopoldina Fellowship Programme supports and promotes young scientists. Also, the Leopoldina confers awards in the form of medals and prizes in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements. The Academy issues several publication series one of which is the world's first medical and natural-scientific journal (founded in 1670). The Leopoldina maintains a library and an archive.
