- IAP Programme on Biosecurity, led by the US National Academy of Sciences: An international Workshop on "Promoting Education on Dual Use Issues in the Life Sciences" was organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw from 15-18 November 2009, under the auspices of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS), the United States Department of State, and IAP. Participants included scientists, educators, and experts in biosecurity with the aim to: consider ideas for filling the gaps, including development of new educational materials and implementation of effective teaching methods; discuss approaches for including education on dual use issues in the training of life scientists; and survey strategies and resources available internationally for education on dual use issues and identify gaps;

- TWAS - the academy of sciences for the developing world - Fellowships: Call for applications now open: Postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholar and advanced research fellowships available to scientists from developing countries TWAS is now accepting applications for its postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholars and advanced research fellowship programmes. The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan and Thailand. Eligible fields include: agricultural and biological sciences, medical and health sciences, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, space and earth sciences, mathematics and physics. - IAP Science Education Programme: led by the Chilean Academy of Sciences - Click HERE to download the trilingual version (French, English and Spanish) of the international report "Inquiry-based science education: an overview for educationalists" produced by the IAP Working Group on Science Education. This publication is a condensed handbook of the Santiago Conference Report (see below) for the use of educationalists and authorities, particularly ministries of education and identifies the benefits of the IBSE method and the disadvantates of not pursing IBSE in primary and secondayr education. - A Regional Workshop on "Strengthening the Collaboration between the AASA Clean Water Programme and the IAP Water Programme" was hosted by the Institute for Water and Environmental Problems, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Barnaul, Russia, October 20-23, 2009. The workshop was supported by IAP, AASA and the SB RAS, and assembled experts and scientists from 11 Asian countries including Armenia, Bangladesh, China, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russia, and Thailand, as well as from Brazil. - Call for nominations for the Lefoulon-Delalande Foundation Grand Prize The Prize will be awarded to a scientist who has made important contributions to cardiovascular physiology, biology, or medicine. Created in 2002, the Grand Prize will be given each year to a scientist who has made important contributions to cardiovascular physiology, biology, or medicine. Taken in the widest sense, these fields also include developmental biology, genetics, epidemiology, physiology, as well as clinical biology, imaging techniques, therapeutics, and the pharmacology of the cardiovascular system. The Lefoulon-Delalande Grand Prize of Euros 500,000 will be awarded in 2010. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 29 January 2010. - IAP released a Statement on Tropical Forests and Climate Change in December 2009. The world’s science academies, members of IAP, cautioned that deforestation must be addressed immediately if we are to meet an 80% CO2 reduction target by 2050. The call comes as global leaders meet at the United Nations Copenhagen Climate Change Conference to negotiate and agree the framework for a new international climate change agreement.
