1993: science summit on world population

In October 1993, representatives of the world's scientific academies met for the first time in New Delhi, India to address issues related to increases in world population. A statement published subsequently in 1994 focused on a range of crucial policy and programmatic concerns, including education, health, the status of women and availability of reproductive health services. It also urged support for new avenues of scientific research. The statement was forwarded to governments and international decision makers, including delegates to the 1994 UN International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo.
