IAP sponsored a world conference on a "Transition to Sustainability in the 21st Century," held at the Tokyo International Forum, 15-18 May 2000. The Science Council of Japan was the host organization. Main themes discussed at the conference were population and health; food; water; energy; consumption; and knowledge and education. The conference concluded with the issuance of a statement underscoring the importance of science and technology both in meeting current human needs and in maintaining the environment and natural resources for future generations.
