Although under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister, it operates independently of the government. The SCJ, which represents some 790,000 scientists, has 210 members and roughly 2,000 associate members. Its primary functions are to: make policy recommendations and deliberate on scientific issues; coordinate the scientific community; promote international exchanges in the scientific field; and communicate with society at large. The SCJ also organizes and supports scientific conferences in Japan, affiliates to international organizations, and sends delegates to international meetings.<br />
