Biography

<p>Dr. Felix K. Assah is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaound&eacute;&nbsp;I, a pioneer&nbsp;member of the Cameroon Academy of Young Scientists, and also Deputy Director of the Health of Population in Transition Research Group, Yaound&eacute;, Cameroon. He qualified with honours in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaound&amp;eacute; I in Cameroon in 2001, and then subsequently trained in Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Cambridge, UK, obtaining an MPhil and then a PhD in 2005 and 2009 respectively. During his training, he was a Wellcome Trust Masters Training Fellow, a Gates Scholar and an Overseas Research Scholar. Thereafter, he has been a Wellcome Trust Training Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. His research interests are in epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and their risk factors.</p> <p>More specifically, his focus is in understanding the changing patterns of lifestyle risk factors in populations undergoing transition (urbanization and westernization); how these relate with and affect the patterns of diseases, with a view to contribute to primordial or primary prevention of these non-communicable diseases. His current research focuses on using objective measurement methods to assess the differences and changing patterns of physical activity between rural and urban dwellers in Cameroon in view of developing locally adapted interventions for physical activity promotion. He has published widely in these research areas. In recognition of his contribution towards medical research and practice in Africa, 2014, he received the African Union-The World Academy of Sciences (AU-TWAS) Young Scientist Award in Cameroon.</p>
